Biodel is developing novel forms of insulin and other peptide hormones for use in treating diabetes and its complications, including hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, cardiovascular complications and weight control.

Biodel's proprietary drug-delivery technology is applicable to a wide range of peptides, proteins, and other macromolecules. It allows the company to alter the pharmacokinetic profile, route of administration, and stability of drugs that otherwise would be impractical to use as therapeutics because they break down too rapidly.

This may have important implications for the use of insulin, a large molecule which is absorbed into the blood relatively slowly. Biodel’s technology facilitates more natural and rapid absorption of recombinant human insulin than current insulin products and appears to improve its therapeutic efficacy in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Clinical studies have shown that Biodel’s lead insulin product candidate, Linjeta™, may be delivered into the bloodstream faster than currently available insulins and with fewer side effects.

The BioHaven Entrepreneurship Series features presentations designed to showcase regionally developed life science technologies that have progressed along the path to commercialization.  Speakers at the BioHaven events represent both the scientific and business side of the enterprises.

The programs focus on key success factors of each company, scientific or technological advantage, business model, and lessons learned in starting and developing the business. The series also provides social networking opportunities for scientists, researchers, and businessmen.
