Some 55% of the venture
capital invested in Connecticut in the fourth quarter of
2009 was in the life sciences area, according to The
MoneyTree® Report, issued quarterly by PricewaterhouseCoopers
and the National Venture Capital Association, based on data
from Thomson Reuters.
The life sciences includes
biotechnology and medical devices. Life science companies in
Connecticut receiving venture capital investments in the
fourth quarter included Rib-X Pharmaceuticals, HistoRx,
Inc., and Affomix Corporation.
In all areas, venture
capitalists invested $18.8 million into 12 deals in
Connecticut
during the fourth quarter of 2009 and a total of $158.2
million for the year across 40 deals. The total invested in
life sciences during the year was $74.5 million.
Nationally, biotechnology
investing declined in 2009 by 19 percent in both dollars and
deals, but for 2009 it was the single largest investment
sector for the year in terms of dollars with $3.5 billion
going into 406 deals.
Biotech was the number one
sector nationally for dollars invested in the fourth quarter
and the only industry sector receiving more than $1 billion
in that quarter.
Nationally the medical
device sector fell 27 percent in dollars and 19 percent in
deals in 2009, finishing the year as the third largest
sector with $2.5 billion going into 309 deals.
"Now that the economy
has begun to show signs of improvement, we expect to see
dollars flow more freely back into those sectors that
offered the most promise before the recession began: clean
technology, life sciences and information technology,"
said Mark Heesen, president of the National Venture Capital
Association.
