mood at the recent JP Morgan Healthcare conference was notably more upbeat than a year ago, but still muted compared to the not-so-distant past.
Uncertainty confronts the industry on at least three fronts. First is the utility and efficiency of the biopharma business model.
Overlaying a reassessment of the biopharma business model is an uncommonly deep and coordinated recession.
A final thick stratum of uncertainty is healthcare reform.

Steitz Gives Nobel Lecture in New Haven
Thomas
Steitz, Ph.D., a founder of New Haven's Rib-X Pharmaceuticals as well as Sterling professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and professor of chemistry at Yale University, on January 13
presented his Nobel Lecture for a local audience. The lecture,
From the Structure and Function of the Ribosome to New
Antibiotics, was first delivered at Stockholm University last December, two days before Professor Steitz received the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Medal of
Technology Nominations Now Open
Nominations for the 2010 Connecticut Medal of Technology are due on March 1, 2010 by 4:00 p.m. The Medal of Technology is Connecticut's highest honor for technological achievement in fields crucial to Connecticut's economic competitiveness. Modeled after the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, this award is bestowed by the Governor in alternate years with the Connecticut Medal of Science.

leaders to reject a proposal to eliminate $10 million in
stem cell research funding for 2010. In a conference call
