Biopharmas Need Investment and Investors Need Clarity

The mood at the recent JP Morgan Healthcare conference was notably more upbeat than a year ago, but still muted compared to the not-so-distant past. Uncertainty confronts the industry on at least three fronts. First is the utility and efficiency of the biopharma business model. Overlaying a reassessment of the biopharma business model is an uncommonly deep and coordinated recession. A final thick stratum of uncertainty is healthcare reform.

Rib-X Founder Steitz Gives Nobel Lecture in New Haven
Thomas Steitz, Ph.D., a founder of New Haven's Rib-X Pharmaceuticals as well as Sterling professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and professor of chemistry at Yale University, on January 13 presented his Nobel Lecture for a local audience. The lecture, From the Structure and Function of the Ribosome to New Antibiotics, was first delivered at Stockholm University last December, two days before Professor Steitz received the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Long Wharf Hosts Forum on Alzheimer's Disease
Health leaders from across the country took part in a day-long global health discussion at Long Wharf Theater in New Haven January 29 devoted to Alzheimer's Disease, part of the Global Health & The Arts series. In addition to hearing from speakers on the scientific and human issues involved in the disease, the audience saw a performance of Lil's 90th, a new play about a family dealing with the mental decline of its patriarch.

Several pharmaceutical companies with operations in Connecticut are focusing more on research into treatments for rare diseases, according to a study released by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development.

Study Shows CI Investments Grow CT Economy
A new study shows consistent contributions to the state's economy of both jobs and revenues resulting from CI investments. "Emerging technologies such as bioscience, life sciences and clean tech are among the fastest-growing business sectors in the country, and CI has placed Connecticut at the forefront of these industries," said Governor M. Jodi Rell.

Medal of Technology Nominations Now Open
Nominations for the 2010 Connecticut Medal of Technology are due on March 1, 2010 by 4:00 p.m. The Medal of Technology is Connecticut's highest honor for technological achievement in fields crucial to Connecticut's economic competitiveness. Modeled after the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, this award is bestowed by the Governor in alternate years with the Connecticut Medal of Science.

Connecticut – the stem cell state
U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy urged Gov. M. Jodi Rell and legislative leaders to reject a proposal to eliminate $10 million in stem cell research funding for 2010. In a conference call with stem cell researchers and reporters, Murphy said that Connecticut has laid the groundwork to be a leader in stem cell research.
