Can
Bioscience Save Connecticut?
|
The Hartford Business Journal recently published a two-part series by Gregory Seay on the state’s bioscience industry. CURE provided background information for the series, and Paul Pescatello, president and CEO of CURE, is quoted in the second article.
The first article asks the question, "Can Bioscience Save
Connecticut?" While noting the struggles of some once-promising Connecticut companies, the article also identifies some new firms that are adding to the vibrancy of the industry. The importance of the state’s stem cell sector and its research universities is
noted, and a video clip of Achillion Pharmaceuticals in New
Haven is included in the online article. View

The second article, "A Rare Find," charts the journey of Alexion Pharmaceuticals. The Cheshire-based company,
Seay says, "chewed through nearly $1 billion before the feds approved its Soliris® blood-disorder treatment in
2007" – but the company is now "a Wall Street darling … with a market value of $4
billion." View

"Bioscience plays to Connecticut’s strengths, which are its ability to do sophisticated research and the development of medicines through clinical trials, and high-value-added manufacturing,"
Pescatello told the Journal.
