To Increase
Tax Revenues, Grow the Tax Base
From the desk of Paul
Pescatello, President and CEO of CURE
The
awarding of the Nobel prize last week to Yale's Thomas Steiz,
a co-founder of News Haven's Rib-X Pharmaceuticals,
underscores the important role that Connecticut bioscience
companies play in this all-important industry. But there is
still much work to be done to secure their place in the
state's economy. With that in mind, I thought it worthwhile to
republish an article by CURE Board member Harry Penner and
Christopher Levesque, CEO of CURE member company Affinimark
Technologies.

Biotech Founder Wins Nobel Prize
Thomas Steitz, M.D.,
Sterling professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry
and professor of chemistry at Yale University, is one of three
winners of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work
describing the structure and function of the ribosome, the
protein making factory key to the function of all life.
His close collaboration with
Yale faculty colleague Peter Moore and interactions with
William Jorgenson led to the establishment of a company, Rib-X
Pharmaceutical, Inc., which is using this knowledge of the
structures of the large ribosomal subunit and its antibiotic
complexes to create new classes of antibiotics.
