To Increase Tax Revenues, Grow the Tax Base

The awarding of the Nobel prize last week to Yale's Thomas Steiz, a co-founder of News Haven's Rib-X Pharmaceuticals, underscores the important role that Connecticut bioscience companies play in this all-important industry. But there is still much work to be done to secure their place in the state's economy. With that in mind, I thought it worthwhile to republish an article by CURE Board member Harry Penner and Christopher Levesque, CEO of CURE member company Affinimark Technologies.

Connecticut Biotech Founder Wins Nobel Prize
Thomas Steitz, M.D., Sterling professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and professor of chemistry at Yale University, is one of three winners of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work describing the structure and function of the ribosome, the protein making factory key to the function of all life. His close collaboration with Yale faculty colleague Peter Moore and interactions with William Jorgenson led to the establishment of a company, Rib-X Pharmaceutical, Inc., which is using this knowledge of the structures of the large ribosomal subunit and its antibiotic complexes to create new classes of antibiotics.

Protein Sciences Pursues Influenza Vaccines
Recent media interest in the swine flu (H1N1) has focused attention on Protein Sciences Corporation. Founded in 1983, Protein Sciences is a privately held vaccine company located in Meriden, CT. Its lead product candidates are vaccines to protect against seasonal and pandemic influenza.
