An All-Important Summer

Now that summer is in full swing, the stakes for Connecticut’s biopharma industry couldn’t be greater. Our state faces a nearly $9 billion deficit. Many proposals have been floated to close this gap, including elimination of some or all of Connecticut’s incentives for biopharma research and development. Suffice it to say, CURE’s working in every way possible to make clear how tremendously counterproductive such proposals are.

CURE Op-Eds Support Biologics Reform Bill
Two recent op-eds by Paul Pescatello, president and CEO of CURE, support the Pathway for Biosimilars Act, a bill now before the U.S. House of Representatives (HR 1548):
Norwich Bulletin
July 13 and New Haven Register July 16.
Pescatello urges Congress, as it weights reforming the health care system, to do so in a way that fosters development of biologics, which are increasingly being seen as the key to treating such serious illnesses as Alzheimer's, diabetes, and cancer.

Curagen Acquired by Celldex Therapeutics
CuraGen Corporation, the Branford-based biotech, has agreed to be acquired for $95 million by Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. of Needham, MA in a tax-free stock-for-stock transaction. Companies and operations that emerged from CuraGen are still active in the state, a testament to its contribution to Connecticut bioscience, Paul Pescatello, president and CEO of CURE, told the Hartford Courant.

Affomix Presents at CURE/Yale BioHaven Series
Rounding out the 2008-2009 CURE/Yale BioHaven Entrepreneurship seminar series was a presentation May 6 by Affomix Corporation, a development-stage company based in Branford, CT. The company has proprietary technology for rapid, automated, high-throughput selection of human monoclonal antibodies.
