Connecticut Emerging As Stem Cell Power

UConn's investment of time and energy in its women's basketball program paid off once again April 7 when the Huskies beat the Louisville Cardinals 76-54. Another Connecticut program that's paying off is the State's investment in stem cell research. While stem cell therapies for such debilitating illnesses as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis are still some years away, it is clear that progress is being made.

Stem Cell Research Vital Driver of CT Bioscience
On March 31 the State of Connecticut Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee directed an additional $9.8 million in stem cell research funds, the third installment of grants from a Stem Cell Research Fund pledged to provide $100 million in funding over 10 years. The awards came just one week after StemCONN 09, an international symposium, brought scientists from around Connecticut, the United States, and the world to New Haven to discuss the latest stem cell research findings.

CellDesign Presents at CURE/Yale BioHaven
CellDesign, Connecticut's first and only commercial enterprise entirely devoted to stem cell technology, gave a presentation March 25 at the Anlyan Center in New Haven as part of the CURE/Yale BioHaven series. Speaking were John Hambor, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the company, and Linda Powers, J.D., co-founder and managing director of Toucan Capital, Inc., a venture capital firm that is the leading U.S. investor in stem cells and regenerative medicine and the major investor in CellDesign.
