Stem Cell Activities Accelerate

Stem
cells are in the news again, and Connecticut continues to be
on the cutting edge of progress in this important research. The state's Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee has directed the allocation of $9.84 million in stem cell research funds to scientists based in Storrs, Farmington, and New Haven.
The awards come at a time when stem cell research is opening new vistas in bioscience research.

A
special panel discussion, "The Next Big Idea -
Emerging
Opportunities in the Life Sciences," took place April 16
at Yale's Anlyan Center as part of the CURE/Yale BioHaven
Entrepreneurship Series. Introduced by Jon Soderstrom,
managing director of the Yale Office of Cooperative
Research, the panel included Roger Longman, managing partner
at Windhover Information; William Burkoth, senior manager
venture capital at Pfizer Venture Investments; Dr. Richard
Flavell, chairman of the Immunobiology Department at Yale
and founding scientist of VaxInnate; Haifan Lin, director of
the Yale Stem Cell Center; and venture capitalist David
Scheer, president of Scheer & Company, Inc.

Sciences Drew Bulk of 2007 CT Venture Capital
Of
the venture capital invested in Connecticut companies in
2007, more than three quarters was attracted by life
sciences companies, according to a CURE analysis of
MoneyTree™ reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the
National Venture Capital Association, based on data provided
by Thomson Reuters. "Life Sciences" includes
Biotechnology and Medical Devices & Equipment.

BioHaven Entrepreneuship Series Continues
Vidus Ocular presented its new device for treatment of glaucoma at a seminar April 23 at Yale’s Anlyan Center, as part of the CURE/Yale BioHaven Entrepreneurship Series. John Puziss, director of technology licensing at the Yale Office of Cooperative Research, introduced Dr. Ben R. Bronstein, co-founder, president, and chief operating officer of Vidus Ocular, and Dr. Bruce Shields, who is co-founder and chief scientific and medical
officer of Vidus Ocular and the Marvin L. Sears professor and chairman emeritus of the Department of Ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine.
