Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest Debuts
At Shelter Rock School in Danbury

“Wow! This is so cool! I love science! I want to be a scientist!”  These are just a few of the exciting comments from elementary students on board the Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest mobile laboratory at its inaugural school visit on May 17th at Shelter Rock School in Danbury.

Present at the celebration were Connecticut Commissioner of Education Mark McQuillan, Congressman Chris Murphy, Boehringer Ingelheim executives, and students and parents from Shelter Rock School, as well as numerous key educators and legislators from across the State. Principal Julia Horne and three classes of students graciously welcomed the visitors.

Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest brings exciting hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education to elementary school children in some of Connecticut’s neediest school districts.

Commissioner McQuillan praised the Science Quest as a model program which builds key partnerships between industry and education. Such partnerships, McQuillan added, are integral to the success of Connecticut’s education system. The Science Quest program, as well as other programs offered by CURE’s BioScience Explorations, was recently included in Connecticut’s federal Race to the Top application.

Congressman Murphy called on the students and teachers present to embrace science and science careers. Murphy added that programs like Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest will go far in helping American students improve their performance in math and science learning.

Dr. Jeanne Magram, vice president of immunology and inflammation research at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, explained Boehringer Ingelheim’s motivation for supporting the Science Quest program. She emphasized that Boehringer Ingelheim believes future biomedical advances that improve people’s lives are deeply dependant on the educational tools children — and potential future scientists — receive. The Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest mobile lab and especially its curricula are extremely valuable tools, bringing 21st century high quality science education to our schools.

Paul Pescatello Welcomes Guests

Paul Pescatello, president and CEO of CURE, said, “Boehringer Ingelheim and CURE have a long partnership in working toward an important goal: stimulating interest in science by bringing engaging quality science curricula directly to students and teachers. The most recent example of Boehringer Ingelheim’s science education commitment is their generous funding and help in developing our new multifaceted science outreach initiative, Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest.”

Pescatello also acknowledged the many guests who had come to express their support for early science education including: State Senator Toni Boucher, State Senator Michael MaLachlan, First Selectman Rudy Marconi of Ridgefield, President Stephen Bull of the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce, Dan Giannini of MannKind Corporation, Science Supervisor Liz Buttner of the Connecticut Department of Education, Science Supervisor Deanna DiLuggo of the Bridgeport Public Schools,  Principal Glenn Horter of New Britain's Holmes Elementary School, Robert Borello of Wesleyan University's PIMMS (project to Increase Mastery of Mathematics and Science), and Bruce Dixon of CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program).

Following a brief ribbon-cutting, Dr. Sarah Berke, director of CURE BioScience Explorations, welcomed the first class of students aboard the new Science Quest vehicle for a hands-on science experiment.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest Program

By focusing on elementary school students, the new Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest program complements and expands the CURE BioScience Explorations educational outreach service, which also includes the CURE BioBus and CURE BioConnection programs.

Boehringer Ingelheim Science Quest is a program of CURE Bioscience Explorations, an educational outreach service of CURE (Connecticut United for Research Excellence), the state bioscience organization.

For 125 years Boehringer Ingelheim has been committed to improving the lives of patients and their families through the discovery and development of innovative medicines. This global pharmaceutical company, with its U.S. headquarters in Ridgefield, has a shared commitment with CURE to stimulate interest in science by bringing engaging, quality science curricula directly to students and teachers.

Continue Science Fun This Summer!

Family involvement is key to sparking a child’s interest in science and cultivating our next generation of scientists. Provide your students and their families with fun science activities they can do together. Visit our Family Science Quest channel on YouTube for six fun and educational activities that will engage and entertain families as they learn about science.

As the school year comes to a close, we've again assembled a summer reading list for the scientifically inclined. Needless to say, the views expressed by individual authors (especially in the works of fiction) do not necessarily represent those of CURE BioScience Explorations’ Staff or its sponsors. But there's a lot of good science and fun in the following titles.
