Nobel Prize Scientist
Leads Mobile Lab Experiment In observance of Bring Your
Child to Work Day April 22, CURE and Boehringer Ingelheim
Pharmaceuticals, Inc invited the public to do science with Dr. Thomas
Steitz, the winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
The new Boehringer
Ingelheim Science Quest mobile laboratory, which is designed to bring science to
elementary school children, was parked at the
South Entrance of the Capitol Building in Hartford, open for
drop-in tours from 10:00 am
– 3:00 pm.
At 11:00 am, CURE and
Boehringer Ingelheim officials, together with science
educators, business executives, government officials, and
the media, gathered in front of the vehicle for brief
remarks. Then Dr. Steitz, who had just returned to the
United States from Europe after delays due to the Icelandic
ash cloud, conducted a science experiment on
magnification with children aboard the new mobile
laboratory vehicle.
Following the vehicle
experiment, Dr. Steitz, together with Dr. James Baxter, who
is vice president of development at Boehringer Ingelheim and
a member of the CURE Board of Directors, and Paul Pescatello, president and CEO
of CURE, met with Connecticut educators to discuss factors
important in early science education.
